Peking Opera, also called Jingju, is the most famous traditional opera in China and is seen as the “national essence of Chinese culture”. It has a history of more than 200 years, starting in the late 1700s in Beijing.
It combines “singing, speaking, acting, dancing, and martial arts” into one art form. Performers wear beautiful, brightly colored costumes and elaborate makeup, which shows their role, personality, and even their age.
There are four main role types:
**Sheng** male roles
**Dan** female roles
**Jing** painted-face male roles
**Chou** comic roles
The stories usually come from Chinese history, legends, and classic novels. The singing is highly stylized, and many movements are symbolic rather than realistic.
